"I think we ought to read only the kind of books that wound and stab us. If the book we are reading doesn't wake us up with a blow on the head, what are we reading it for? ...we need the books that affect us like a disaster, that grieve us deeply, like the death of someone we loved more than ourselves, like being banished into forests far from everyone, like a suicide. A book must be the axe for the frozen sea inside us." -Kafka

Elvis Costello
This post is a mini recommending moment. My favorite artist is Elvis Costello, and lately I have been noticing some connections to Borges. His lyrics make him so special, especially today when pop artists tend to sing the same line over and over again. Elvis Costello's lyrics are smart and dynamic and often introduce me to new vocabulary. Just as Borges writes about complex ideas, twists our minds, and sometimes frightens us with implications about our own world, Elvis, in my mind, changed song-writing to an art. Man Called Uncle is a good place to start. This song is a complicated love story in which the narrator expresses his love for a girl who he criticizes for leading older men on. This subject reminded me of The Garden of Forking Paths and the different possibilities that happen at the same time. I strongly suggest that everyone at least check him out.
