"I think we ought to read only the kind of books that wound and stab us. If the book we are reading doesn't wake us up with a blow on the head, what are we reading it for? ...we need the books that affect us like a disaster, that grieve us deeply, like the death of someone we loved more than ourselves, like being banished into forests far from everyone, like a suicide. A book must be the axe for the frozen sea inside us." -Kafka

"Time In a Bottle" - Jim Croce
I chose this song not for the fact that it's a love song so much as it discusses misplaced time which seems to be a large part of Joe's story. Joe tries to save things that had a lasting effect on him by sewing them into his favorite jacket. The idea of saving time in a bottle seems to be a very close parallel to this idea. Joe's wife keeps a journal with her thoughts, emotions and desires which is like the "box just for wishes and dreams that would never come true" that Croce mentions. The Lyrics, "there never seems to be enough time to do the things you want to do once you find them" go along perfectly with Joe's idea that there were so many things that he had not done and hadn't noticed until it was too late to do them. The instrumentals in the background give one the idea of being in a mystical dream world which I thought corresponded to the reflective theme of the story. Lastly, this song is on the album "Photographs and Memories" which jumped out at me like a small child waving its arms and begging for attention.
